NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Pushes for Quick End to Clippers Investigation

NBA commissioner Adam Silver wants the investigation into the LA Clippers' alleged salary cap circumvention to conclude soon. The probe, led by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, examines whether the Clippers funneled money to Kawhi Leonard through his $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, which also had a $300 million team partnership. The law firm's work is independent despite the NBA covering costs.

Silver emphasized the league must follow facts rather than perception, noting the investigation began in September. The focus centers on Clippers owner Steve Ballmer's $60 million investment in Aspiration, which filed for bankruptcy after co-founder Joe Sanberg was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Teams need clarity on their operational parameters while the process concludes.

During the Finals media day, Silver also addressed other league matters. He confirmed the board of governors approved draft lottery reforms to combat tanking, with immediate action taken after teams appeared to rationally pursue poor records for draft advantages. Expansion discussions continue for Las Vegas and Seattle, with a decision expected by year-end 2026.

The European league initiative remains on track for the 2027-28 season, featuring a 16-team structure with 12 permanent franchises. Silver stressed the importance of getting the Clippers investigation right, regardless of external pressures or timelines.
