Jamahl Mosley, the new head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, unveiled a plan to unlock Zion Williamson’s playmaking in his inaugural press conference. Mosley urged the team to open the floor, give Williamson more attacking space, and deploy him in varied positions to exploit his high basketball IQ today.

Mosley, who guided the Orlando Magic to three straight playoff runs, was dismissed after a first‑round exit. New Orleans finished last two seasons 26–56 and 21–61. Williamson averaged 21 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot 60% last year, yet injuries have limited him to 30 games or fewer in three seasons.

Mosley will also focus on developing young talent such as Trey Murphy III, Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen while leveraging veterans Dejounte Murray, Saddiq Bey and Herb Jones for defensive versatility. He vows an “unapologetically physical” approach, believing daily habits and routines are key to reaching elite performance levels today.

Executive VP Joe Dumars praised Mosley’s alignment with the organization’s vision, noting that owner Gayle Benson’s support enabled the hiring. Mosley’s defensive pedigree and emphasis on physicality signal a shift toward rebuilding a competitive squad, with Williamson’s expanded role poised to elevate the Pelicans’ fortunes amid a struggling franchise today.
