LeBron James will not return to the Los Angeles Lakers next season, ending his eight-year tenure with the franchise. The 39-year-old informed the organization Tuesday that he'll play elsewhere, according to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. James joined the Lakers in 2018 and delivered an NBA championship in 2020 while earning his fourth Finals MVP.

During his Lakers career, James led the team to the playoffs in six of eight seasons and made history in February 2023 by passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time scoring leader. He's the only player in franchise history to average 20 points, five rebounds and five assists in more than five consecutive seasons, achieving those numbers across all eight campaigns in Los Angeles.

The Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly lead the pursuit for James' services. Social media erupted with reactions from NBA figures including Luka Doncic, Dwight Howard, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who all thanked James for his contributions to the Lakers organization.

James' departure marks the end of one of the most successful eras in recent Lakers history. His decision to leave Los Angeles reshapes the Western Conference landscape while potentially returning him to Cleveland where his professional journey began.
