Knicks' Five Urgent Issues: Can Towns, Brunson Lead Them to Finals?

The New York Knicks face five critical challenges as they chase a Finals appearance. Coach Mike Brown's emphasis on a standard of sacrifice and connectivity is being tested. After a strong stretch ending January, the Knicks have stumbled, losing three of four games in Los Angeles. Owner James Dolan's demand for a Finals berth adds pressure. The team is 42-25, third in the East, but their recent defensive slide and offensive inconsistencies are glaring weaknesses.

Maximizing Karl-Anthony Towns remains a puzzle. His scoring (20.0 PPG) and efficiency are down from last season, and his minutes have decreased. Brown clarified Towns should be the No. 2 option behind Jalen Brunson, not the primary ball-handler. Towns acknowledges the adjustment, stating, 'My usage is high, I've got to do something with that.' The Knicks' offense struggles when Towns takes fewer than 15 shots, highlighting the need for better ball movement.

Defensive cohesion is another major concern. The Knicks were a top-five team in clutch play last season but have slipped. Their defensive efficiency has dropped significantly since mid-January, ranking 23rd in the league. While Josh Hart insists they are improving, the team's recent defensive lapses against the Clippers and Lakers are alarming. Brown is studying elite defensive teams to find solutions.

Getting Brunson back on track is vital. Teams are doubling him more, leading to 20 turnovers in two games. His assist-to-turnover ratio is even, and while he's a key creator, the Knicks need him to reduce mistakes. Brown's simplified offense relies on Brunson, but his recent miscues are costly.

The Knicks have six weeks to fix these issues before the real season starts. Their ability to elevate Towns, shore up defense, and get Brunson playing mistake-free basketball will determine if they can meet Dolan's Finals expectation.
