Clippers, Raptors Negotiating Kawhi Leonard Trade Deal

The LA Clippers and Toronto Raptors are actively discussing a trade for All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard, according to ESPN sources. Leonard's representatives told teams he'll only sign an extension with Toronto if the Clippers don't retain him, despite previously preferring to stay in LA. The Clippers made no long-term commitment this offseason, leaving Leonard with just the 2026-27 season at $50.3 million remaining on his contract.

Leonard averaged 27.9 points in 65 games last season, finishing seventh in MVP voting and earning All-NBA second team honors. This marked just his second 60+ game season since 2018-19 with Toronto, where he captured the NBA title and Finals MVP. The Clippers stumbled to a 42-40 record and play-in tournament exit, failing to meet expectations despite Leonard's career year.

The trade discussions coincide with an NBA investigation into whether the Clippers circumvented salary cap rules through Leonard's $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration. Team owner Steve Ballmer invested $60 million in the company. For Toronto, acquiring Leonard would signal a push to return to Eastern Conference relevance after winning just one playoff series since his departure.

Leonard becomes eligible to sign a $123.7 million extension with any new team immediately. At 35, this represents likely his final opportunity for a significant contract while the Clippers face a critical decision about their franchise direction.
