The New York Yankees have designated right-hander Cade Winquest for assignment to make room for Luis Gil, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gil is scheduled to start against the Tampa Bay Rays, while Winquest becomes the first Rule 5 player cut without playing a regular-season game since Josh Phelps in 2007.

Winquest, 25, went 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA over nine spring training outings after being selected from St. Louis in the Rule 5 draft. The former eighth-round Cardinals draft pick out of UT Arlington appeared in just nine games during spring training, failing to establish himself in the Yankees' bullpen.

The Yankees must offer Winquest back to St. Louis for $50,000 if he clears waivers. If the Cardinals decline, New York could assign him outright to the minors. The move comes after the Athletics blanked the Yankees in a one-hit shutout, with Jeffrey Springs combining with two relievers for the 1-0 victory.
