The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians will both turn to openers for Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday. The White Sox hold a 2-0 series lead and look to complete the sweep at Rate Field. Chicago will start lefty Sean Newcomb, while Cleveland counters with rookie right-hander Daniel Espino.
Newcomb, who posted a 0.84 ERA in six outings as an opener this season, said the role has been familiar. "There was a handful of us in that same role, and we were kind of feeding off each other," he said. He faces a struggling Guardians lineup led by Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, and Chase De Lauter.
Espino, Cleveland's first-round pick in 2019, has battled injuries including two shoulder surgeries. He said, "I was wishing just to throw a baseball. I'm now starting a Game 3." Guardians manager Stephen Vogt explained, "Of all the options in the bullpen, I felt like giving the ball to Daniel was the right call."
