Walt Weiss stepped into his new role as Braves manager with a resounding 6-0 victory over the Royals in his season-opening game. The former Rockies skipper, who spent eight years as Brian Snitker's bench coach, couldn't help but reflect on the legacy he's inheriting. 'It's a little overwhelming,' Weiss admitted after the win, acknowledging the weight of following legendary managers like Bobby Cox and Snitker.

Weiss's connection to the Braves organization runs deep. He played under Cox during the final three seasons of his 14-year MLB career and returned to Atlanta in 2017 as bench coach, serving as Snitker's right-hand man for eight seasons. Snitker, who led the Braves to their 2021 World Series title, praised his successor: 'They don't come any better than Walt.' The veteran manager revealed he would call Weiss every offseason when his name came up for other managerial positions.

Pitcher Chris Sale delivered a dominant performance, shutting out the Royals for six innings with six strikeouts. The left-hander said the team is ready to fight for their new manager, noting a special celebration in the clubhouse. Weiss participated in a playful 'player of the game' putting contest, though he missed the 30-40 foot putt. The win puts to rest any concerns about another slow start for Atlanta, as Weiss smiled and said, 'It's nice to be 1-0.'
