Griffin Jax left his start against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday after a line drive from Leody Tavares struck him in the back during the second inning. The back contusion forced the right-hander off the mound, and he is now listed as day-to-day. Jax initially stayed in to finish the inning, giving up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts in two frames.

The injury unfolded with a runner on first after a fielding error by Jax. Tavares lined the ball into his back, and Jax immediately went down near the mound before being helped to his feet. Baltimore tied it at 1 on a fielder's choice, then jumped ahead 3-1 on an RBI single by Jackson Holliday and a sacrifice fly from Taylor Ward.

Garrett Cleavinger entered to start the third inning. The Orioles won 3-1, taking advantage of a rotation that lost its starter mid-bout. Jax's status going forward will determine how thin Tampa Bay's pitching depth becomes over the rest of this series.
