Rays Demote Steven Matz to Bullpen After Poor Starts

The Tampa Bay Rays are shifting left-hander Steven Matz to the bullpen following back-to-back ineffective outings that pushed his ERA to 5.48. The 35-year-old veteran, who entered Saturday with a 4-3 record, lasted just 1⅔ innings against Detroit while surrendering five runs on six hits including two homers.

Matz's fastball velocity dropped to 92 mph in that start, below his season average of 93.3 mph. His last two starts have been disastrous: 11 earned runs allowed over 4⅔ innings with only four strikeouts. Manager Kevin Cash pulled him after just 53 pitches, citing the diminished velocity as a concern.

The move comes less than three weeks after Matz returned from the injured list due to elbow inflammation. While the Rays haven't named his rotation replacement, the timing suggests they're prioritizing immediate results over waiting for Matz to rediscover his form. This demotion reflects the team's unwillingness to let struggling pitchers continue in the starting role.

Tampa Bay enters Saturday's action leading the American League East by 1½ games. Moving Matz to relief gives the club flexibility while protecting their division lead, though it leaves questions about their playoff rotation depth if other starters falter.
