The Mets dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday after a 34-47 start that left the club 13 games under .500. President of baseball operations David Stearns said the decision, made with owner Steve Cohen, aimed to give the last‑place team a chance to salvage the remaining 81 games. Shortstop Francisco Lindor and third baseman Bo Bichette publicly accepted responsibility for the collapse.

Mendoza’s tenure ended with a six‑game losing streak, during which the Mets surrendered 15 runs to Philadelphia and committed six infield errors against Chicago. The rotation posted the league’s third‑highest ERA, allowing 54 runs in that span, dropping the club 14½ games behind the Braves and 9½ behind the Cardinals for a wild‑card spot. Interim manager Andy Green, formerly VP of player development, will steer the squad while retaining his executive role after the season.

With a 34-47 record and a 5.2% postseason probability, the Mets face an uphill climb. Stearns emphasized that belief alone won’t translate into wins and that execution must improve. Lindor reiterated the players’ duty to win as many games as possible, leaving the organization to hope the interim change sparks immediate results.
