Mets' Bobby V Disguise Night Celebrates Infamous Dugout Stunt

The New York Mets are bringing back one of baseball's most memorable moments with Bobby Valentine Disguise Night on May 29 at Citi Field. The promotion, announced Thursday, will give the first 15,000 fans a glasses-mustache combo inspired by Valentine's 1999 dugout stunt. The former Mets manager, who led the team from 1996-2002, famously returned to the dugout wearing a fake mustache after being ejected during a game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Valentine's stunt occurred on June 9, 1999, when he was tossed in the 12th inning but returned wearing sunglasses and a mustache fashioned from eye black. The 75-year-old manager has embraced the moment over the years, even wearing disguises during Old-Timers' Day appearances and television broadcasts. His 536-467 record with the Mets included a 2000 World Series appearance, but the dugout disguise remains his most iconic moment.

"I love it!" Valentine texted about the planned giveaway. The promotion comes as the Mets continue creative fan engagement efforts at Citi Field. Valentine's stunt earned him a two-game suspension and $5,000 fine, but it's now being celebrated as part of franchise history. The glasses-mustache giveaway promises to be one of the most talked-about promotions of the 2026 season.
