Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was hospitalized Sunday after being struck in the face by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle during a 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Craig Counsell said Bregman was hit under his left eye, sustaining a cut and swelling, and was sent for testing. In the fourth inning, Michael Busch fouled off a pitch from Reds right-hander Luis Mey that struck Bregman, who immediately jogged to the dugout with a hand over his eye.

Blood was visible on his face as he was escorted by an athletic trainer. Matt Shaw pinch-hit for Bregman. Bregman is batting .260 with 26 home runs and 88 RBIs in 152 games this season.

He signed a $175 million, five-year free agent deal in January. The Cubs could clinch a postseason berth later Sunday with an Arizona Diamondbacks loss to the New York Yankees.
