Cactus League Shifts Spring Games to Evenings Amid Historic Phoenix Heat Wave

Cactus League officials moved at least 10 spring training games to evening slots this week as Phoenix braces for record-breaking March temperatures. The heat wave is expected to push highs above 106°F through the final weekend of spring training, forcing adjustments to protect players and fans. A Saturday game between the Athletics and Dodgers was rescheduled to 11 a.m. MST, while weekday contests now begin after 6 p.m. to avoid peak heat.

The extreme weather marks an unprecedented March event in Phoenix, where the previous earliest 100°F+ day occurred March 26, 1988. Cactus League stadiums are now allowing fans to bring additional water bottles and installing extra hydration stations. Bridget Binsbacher, executive director, emphasized health concerns: "The No. 1 priority is safety."

These changes reflect broader climate challenges for MLB spring training. While Arizona heat is typical in summer, March temperatures this high could disrupt player conditioning and travel plans. Teams may face logistical hurdles as rosters finalize and contract negotiations accelerate under atypical weather conditions.

The Cactus League’s flexibility in scheduling sets a potential precedent for future heat-related adjustments. As teams prepare for the regular season, the success of these modifications will be closely watched by MLB officials and fans alike.
