Bibee makes history with winless start streak

Cleveland pitcher Tanner Bibee became the first in franchise history to go winless in his first 13 starts after Sunday's 9-4 loss to Boston. Despite leaving with a lead for the first time this season, the bullpen couldn't hold as Boston rallied for six runs in the seventh inning. Bibee joins an exclusive club of 12 opening day starters since 1976 to make at least 10 starts without a win before June.

The right-hander is 0-7 with a 4.57 ERA, having shown improvement with four quality starts in his last five games. Bibee's performance contrasts sharply with his first two seasons (22-12, 3.25 ERA) where he finished second in AL Rookie of Year voting in 2023. His struggles come after signing a five-year, $48 million contract last spring training.

Cleveland's third-worst challenge rate in the league (44.4%) hurt them when they lost their only challenge. General manager Chris Antonetti noted the team hasn't scored many runs when Bibee pitches well. Bibee remains focused on self-evaluation, acknowledging pitching is different from the other nine positions on the field.
