Why Seahawks Traded for Quenton Nelson

With the NFL trade deadline two weeks away, the Seattle Seahawks acquired All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick. The 4-3 Seahawks are adding an All-Pro offensive lineman to an already potent offense. Nelson is one of four offensive players since the 1970 merger to be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of their first eight seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Franco Harris, Barry Sanders and Joe Thomas, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The 2-5 Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard last week, which quickly set off trade speculation around key players. Nelson was the first to be dealt, but hours later Indianapolis sent DT De Forest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.

Seattle's offensive line has not been a glaring weakness this season, but it hasn't matched the strength many expected after the reigning Super Bowl champions returned all five starters. Nelson will be an upgrade over Anthony Bradford. Combined with the expected returns of running backs Jadarian Price and Zach Charbonnet, the Seahawks' run game should improve after a start that includes a 3.9 yards-per-carry average, ranking 23rd through seven games. General manager John Schneider also has a long relationship with interim Colts GM Ed Dodds, who previously worked in Seattle's front office, and a history of aggressive moves at the deadline. With the Seahawks two games behind the 49ers in the NFC West, Schneider was unlikely to sit this deadline out.

Nelson has played only left guard since Indianapolis drafted him sixth overall in 2018, so the line will need reshuffling. Grey Zabel, Seattle's 2025 first-round pick, currently starts at left guard. The most logical option is moving Zabel to right guard, which would push Bradford, the starter there since 2023, into a backup role.
