Verstappen Finds Joy in Nürburgring Racing Amid F1 Frustrations

Max Verstappen is discovering renewed enthusiasm through his preparation for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, finding joy in wheel-to-wheel racing that contrasts sharply with his frustrations in Formula 1. The four-time world champion recently engaged in a thrilling six-lap battle with veteran GT racer Christopher Haase during an NLS2 race, showcasing the close competition he craves.

Verstappen's Mercedes-AMG GT3 remained glued to Haase's Audi R8 for most of the stint, coming within centimeters as he sought an opportunity to pass. The intense duel, which saw them trade the lead three times along the Döttinger Höhe straight, reminded Verstappen of "real motorsport" after expressing disappointment with F1's battery-assisted overtaking. "I jump out of the car and I'm happy," he told ESPN, contrasting this with his post-race frustrations in the Red Bull.

This passion project began last year when Red Bull granted Verstappen permission to race at the Nürburgring alongside his F1 commitments. Team advisor Helmut Marko revealed the decision was made because Verstappen had "lost a little bit of interest" in F1, with Marko later crediting the side project for contributing up to 0.2 seconds of lap time benefit in Verstappen's championship fight.
