UEFA has warned that it may pursue legal action against FIFA president Gianni Infantino over his controversial World Cup sell‑off plan, according to sources quoted by ESPN.

The body sent a document‑preservation letter to Infantino, formally requesting that he refrain from destroying any evidence related to the proposal, which would create a $20 billion company to run the World Cup with private investors, including the Kushner family. UEFA also notified Joshua Kushner, Greg Maffei, JP Morgan and Open Economics that it was considering legal action over their association with the shelved project.

Infantino cancelled the proposal after widespread backlash and an unprecedented boycott by UEFA’s 55 member nations, who declared that “some things are simply too important to sell.” Two senior FIFA officials resigned or criticised the plan, citing deception and a need to halt the project. The collapse of the $20 billion subsidiary has cast doubt on Infantino’s re‑election as FIFA president in March next year. UEFA’s threat underscores the growing divide between football’s governing bodies and the private‑sector approach that Infantino championed.
