Trump Executive Order Protects Army-Navy Game Broadcast

President Donald Trump issued an executive order Friday mandating that no college football games, including the College Football Playoff, be broadcast during the Army-Navy matchup in December. The order directs the commerce secretary and FCC chair to coordinate with the CFP committee, NCAA, and media partners to ensure an exclusive broadcasting window for the storied rivalry.

Trump's order references potential CFP expansion, which could push first-round games earlier in December. Under the current 12-team format, first-round games occur the weekend after Army-Navy. If the playoff expands to 24 teams, starting the postseason earlier would become necessary to accommodate additional games. A 16-team expansion wouldn't necessarily change the timeline.

The Army-Navy Game is scheduled for Dec. 12 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with CFP first-round games set for Dec. 18-19. The annual rivalry between Army and Navy has been played every year since 1930, including during World War II and the pandemic-altered 2020 season, with 126 meetings total.
