Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee Friday and will miss the season, a school spokesperson told ESPN. The junior from Columbia, Maryland, was expected to be a leader of new coordinator Jim Knowles' defense. Farooq left practice in an ambulance and was taken to UT Medical Center in Knoxville.

"We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process," Tennessee football said in a statement Saturday. "We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall."

Last season, Farooq started all 13 games and ranked second in the SEC with four forced fumbles. He added two interceptions and 76 tackles. The Volunteers added three experienced transfers to bolster a defense that ranked next-to-last in the SEC in pass defense (244.8 YPG) and 14th in scoring defense (28.8 PPG) in 2025.

Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf is projected to start at the other safety spot, while Kansas State transfer Qua Moss is expected at nickelback. Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane, who was behind Farooq in camp, should move up the depth chart. Sophomore Dylan Lewis and freshman Jamyan Theodore are also competing for playing time.
