Rory McIlroy Admits Wrongness of PGA Tour-PIF Deal as LIV Golf Faces PIF Exit

Reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy publicly admitted it would have been a wrong choice for the PGA Tour to sign with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund during a news conference ahead of the PGA Championship. The golfer, who once urged the Tour to reunify with PIF, stated, 'I'm glad I was wrong,' acknowledging the futility of the deal amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

On April 30, the PIF announced it would no longer fund the LIV Golf League beyond the current season, citing a shift in its investment strategy to prioritize domestic programs amid Middle Eastern conflicts. This decision leaves LIV in a precarious position, with six more tournaments scheduled this season, including the May 28-31 event in South Korea and an August 6-9 U.S. event at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

McIlroy revealed he began hearing speculation about the PIF's withdrawal as early as March, even discussing it with a close friend who caddied for LIV golfer Tom McKibbin. LIV, which has spent over $5 billion with the PIF since 2022, is now finalizing its business plan with CEO Scott O'Neil focusing on team-based value. Meanwhile, LIV stars Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have multiyear contracts, while Bryson DeChambeau's deal expires after this season.
