No. 1 Northwestern captured its ninth NCAA Division I women's lacrosse national championship with a 14-11 victory over No. 2 North Carolina in Evanston. Freshman Gabriella McCollester, who entered after senior attacker Lucy Munro suffered a first-quarter injury, scored all four of her goals in the second half to spark the comeback. Madison Taylor, a Tewaaraton Award finalist, finished with seven points including the final goal.

Taylor Lapointe opened the scoring with two goals in the first two minutes, and Aditi Foster added another to force a North Carolina timeout five minutes in. The score was deadlocked 6-6 at halftime. After the break, the Tar Heels went on a 3-1 run to take their first lead, with Chloe Humphrey—last year's Tewaaraton Award winner—tying the Division I single-season record with her 109th goal. McCollester's hat-trick goal tied it at 11 in the fourth quarter, and Northwestern scored five unanswered goals while shutting out North Carolina for the final 15 minutes.

The Wildcats became the first team to win a national championship on their home field since 1984. Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller has steered Northwestern since 2005, when she revived the program, and with her ninth title, she becomes the all-time winningest coach in Division I championship game history.
