McGregor Knee Injury UFC 329 Coach Statement

Conor McGregor suffered a devastating 69-second loss to Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas on Saturday, marking his first fight in five years. The welterweight bout ended when McGregor's right knee buckled immediately after throwing an opening jump switch kick, prompting the referee to wave off the contest.

Longtime head coach John Kavanagh insisted Sunday that the knee was "never an issue" during training camp. Writing on Facebook, Kavanagh stated the specific kick had been drilled daily for months and performed multiple times in warmup without incident. "Knee went when he [threw] the very first kick," Kavanagh wrote, adding he was devastated by the outcome.

UFC CEO Dana White said Saturday that he and UFC doctors believed the injury was likely a torn ACL, which McGregor previously suffered in 2013. White dismissed speculation of a preexisting condition, pointing to McGregor's movement during news conferences and the weigh-in faceoff where he ran up on Holloway. White also noted massive viewership, citing 80 million viewers on his personal account alone.

At 37 years old with a 22-7 record, McGregor now faces another extended rehabilitation after consecutive fight-ending leg injuries. The quick termination raises serious questions about his durability at welterweight and whether a third comeback attempt is viable given the recurring structural failures.
