Madison Keys survived a second-set scare to beat American Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 7-5 and reach the Australian Open third round. The defending champion started strong but fell behind 5-2 in the second set before rallying at John Cain Arena.

Fellow American Jessica Pegula, the sixth seed, had a smoother path, dispatching McCartney Kessler 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets. Both wins keep the high-seeded Americans on track in a tournament where they are among the favorites to challenge the top contenders.

Keys admitted she expected Krueger to raise her level after the first set. Her focus shifted to basics to force a third set, but she ultimately regained momentum to close out the match. Her next opponent will test her consistency as she aims to defend her title.
