Polish short-track speedskater Kamila Sellier was taken to the hospital after a competitor's blade sliced her over the left eye during the women's 1500 meters at the Milan Cortina Olympics. The incident occurred during a quarterfinal race when Kristen Santos-Griswold of the United States was penalized for an illegal lane pass, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving Ariana Fontana of Italy.

Sellier was immobilized on a stretcher and wheeled out of the Milano Ice Skating Arena as workers cleaned blood from the final corner of the track. Polish officials confirmed her eye was OK, though she received stitches at the arena before undergoing further tests at the hospital. Fontana, competing in her record-tying 15th Olympic appearance, sustained damage to her skinsuit and received treatment for her left hip but advanced to the semifinals, finishing second to Belgium's Hanne Desmet.

The dramatic incident unfolded on the final night of short-track speedskating competition, with the arena packed with spectators. Fontana, the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 1500 meters, was attempting to break a tie with Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen as the most decorated Winter Olympian with 15 total medals.
