Jaguars' Hamilton: From Paralysis Risk to NFL Return

Jacksonville Jaguars' DaVon Hamilton faced a life-threatening medical emergency in August 2023 when a spinal epidural abscess left him unable to walk. The 6-foot-4, 335-pound nose tackle experienced such severe back pain during joint practices with the Lions that trainers had to assist him onto the team bus. Hamilton's legs went numb, and medical staff rushed him to Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.

Team physician Kevin Kaplan and neurosurgeon Bradley Wallace discovered Hamilton was almost paralyzed. The condition, rarely seen in young healthy athletes, required immediate surgery to prevent permanent damage. Wallace performed a minimally invasive procedure to drain the infection, allowing Hamilton to potentially resume his NFL career. Hamilton spent a week in hospital before being placed on injured reserve.

Despite losing 30 pounds and struggling with weakness, Hamilton's determination drove his recovery. He returned to the weight room by early October and was activated from IR on October 28, 2023. The following day, he contributed 14 snaps in the Jaguars' victory over Pittsburgh, proving his resilience after nearly facing paralysis.
