Illinois Alcohol Sales Restricted Before Elite Eight Game

Champaign city officials have imposed emergency alcohol restrictions on the University of Illinois campus ahead of Saturday's Elite Eight game against Iowa. The measures include requiring campus bars to serve drinks only in paper and plastic cups, banning packaged liquor sales one hour after tipoff, and limiting keg purchases to one per customer.

City officials cited concerns about property damage and public safety following Thursday's Sweet 16 victory celebration, when students were seen climbing on statues. Deputy liquor commissioner Jeff Hamilton said similar restrictions were implemented during Illinois' 2005 championship run. The city wants to prevent glass bottles from becoming hazards while still allowing bars to operate.

The measures come as Illinois reaches the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005, having defeated Houston 75-69 in January's regular season meeting. Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen urged fans to celebrate responsibly while supporting the team's Final Four aspirations.
