Former Big East POY RJ Luis Commits to LSU Despite Eligibility Questions

Former St. John's star RJ Luis, the 2025 Big East Player of the Year, has committed to LSU despite facing eligibility challenges. Luis averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Red Storm, leading them to both Big East titles while earning conference tournament MVP honors. His path to Baton Rouge follows an unconventional route through professional basketball.

After declaring for the NBA draft following his standout season, Luis went undrafted before signing a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz. He was subsequently traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Georges Niang and future draft picks, only to be waived before appearing in an NBA game. Luis then attempted to continue with Boston's G League affiliate but was released while injured.

The NCAA has consistently ruled that players who sign NBA contracts become ineligible for college competition. This precedent was recently tested by former Alabama center Charles Bediako, who briefly gained court-ordered reinstatement before having his eligibility revoked again. NCAA President Charlie Baker has maintained firm stance against granting eligibility to professional players.

LSU and head coach Will Wade, rehired in March 2022, appear willing to navigate the eligibility uncertainty surrounding transfers like Luis. The Tigers are also pursuing 25-year-old Yam Madar, an Israeli player drafted by the Celtics in 2020. Luis will likely need to pursue legal avenues similar to Bediako to potentially play for LSU.
