Cunningham: WNBA Needs Bold Commissioner

Sophie Cunningham stated the WNBA needs a "bold" commissioner aligned with player interests, suggesting Cathy Engelbert's vision may not match the league's direction. Speaking to USA Today, Cunningham acknowledged Engelbert's contributions but emphasized the need for leadership supporting players as "trailblazers of what women's leagues can look like."

Engelbert's contract expires after the 2026 season, marking her seventh year as commissioner. Her future remains uncertain following contentious labor negotiations earlier this year. Cunningham noted that ultimate decisions rest with NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

The comments come amid controversy surrounding Cunningham's stance on transgender athletes, which sparked protests outside Indiana Fever games in Seattle and Portland. Engelbert responded by calling for a task force meeting to review league policies. Cunningham defended her position, saying players should be able to address both basketball and social issues while maintaining focus on the game.

Cunningham emphasized that athletes can excel on the court while engaging in broader discourse, stating she wants to return to basketball while continuing advocacy work.
