Wyndham Clark carded an even-par 70 on Saturday at Shinnecock Hills, extending his lead to six shots over Scottie Scheffler heading into the U.S. Open final round. The Colorado native delivered four crucial par saves in a five-hole stretch and recorded the tournament's only eagle on the par-5 16th with a perfectly executed 3-wood to four feet.

Clark sits at 7-under 203, the lowest 54-hole score ever at Shinnecock Hills, putting him in position to become the first wire-to-wire U.S. Open champion in 12 years. Scheffler, who needs a career Grand Slam, rallied with three consecutive birdies and a 32 on the back nine, but faces a daunting Sunday comeback.

The six-shot deficit represents uncharted territory for U.S. Open final rounds. Greg Norman's 1996 Masters collapse remains the only major where a six-shot lead was surrendered. Xander Schauffele acknowledged the challenge ahead: Clark can afford even par or 1 over and still claim victory. Clark's aggressive play and clutch putting kept the lead growing despite some errant shots.

Five players remain under par after three rounds, with Sam Stevens, Tom Kim and Sahith Theegala all at 1-under 209. Clark's combination of scrambling par saves and spectacular shot-making has put him on the verge of his second U.S. Open title, three years after his breakthrough victory at Los Angeles Country Club.
