SEC: LSU dispute remains 'live,' school lacks institutional control

The SEC has filed a memorandum opposing LSU's request that a federal court dismiss the conference's lawsuit against the university and its officials. The conference argues a live controversy still exists and says LSU lacks institutional control over its athletic programs.

The SEC's court filing, issued Tuesday, said the case addresses a broader dispute, including what it calls the defendants' ongoing defiance of the Conference's Professionalism Rules and the threat that they will interfere with any effort to terminate LSU's membership. The filing points to LSU's men's basketball team's effort to add RJ Luis Jr., the 2025 Big East Player of the Year, who previously signed multiple two-way NBA contracts. The dispute began with coach Lane Kiffin's plans to add tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, who both spent time in NFL training camps.

LSU men's basketball coach Will Wade said Tuesday that his team will follow SEC "protocols" despite Luis winning a preliminary injunction in a Louisiana court. Wade said Luis did not travel with the team to an exhibition game and has not been rostered. The Tigers are also still trying to add former UCLA standouts Donovan Dent and Skyy Clark, who secured clearance to play a fifth season through a California court case.

Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill, a named defendant, filed a motion Sept. 25 to dismiss the complaint with prejudice. Responding to Tuesday's filing, she said LSU has broken no rules, the case is moot, and the lawsuit should be dismissed.
