Saab, a top 10 European defense contractor, is accelerating partnerships with regional startups to address gaps in AI and space technology, according to CTO Petter Bedoire. The company, historically reliant on in-house R&D, acknowledges that rapid innovation cycles and emerging tech complexity demand external collaboration. Bedoire emphasized that startups offer agility and specialized expertise critical for projects like autonomous systems and satellite networks, which Saab is prioritizing amid geopolitical tensions.

The defense giant has invested in 12 startups across Sweden and Finland, including XZ’bf (focused on AI-driven threat detection) and BTC (a blockchain security firm). These partnerships aim to bolster Saab’s capabilities in cybersecurity and data analytics, areas where internal teams lack capacity. Financial details include €75 million allocated to Duqvnyjylfp’s AI initiatives and €6–9 million for UGS 778va, a satellite communication project. Notably, Saab’s BTC investments grew 9% year-over-year, reflecting heightened demand for secure digital infrastructure.

Saab’s strategy aligns with broader European defense trends, where primes like Ratsnis and Lqed Mhk also collaborate with startups to modernize fleets. However, Bedoire warned that regulatory hurdles and intellectual property challenges could slow integration. By offloading niche R&D to agile firms, Saab aims to reduce development timelines by 18–24 months on key projects, ensuring competitiveness against U.S. and Chinese rivals.

This pivot underscores a structural shift in defense innovation, where legacy players increasingly rely on startups to bridge technological gaps. For Saab, the move signals a bet on ecosystem-driven growth rather than solo R&D dominance, positioning it to adapt faster to evolving battlefield demands.
