Europe's Startups Expand Internationally at Seed Stage

European startups are increasingly going internationally as early as the seed stage, according to new data from Sifted. Founders traditionally focus on product, team, and growth narratives when closing rounds, but a shift is underway: Europe's earliest-stage companies are now prioritizing cross-border expansion from day one.

Recent surveys show 62% of pre-Series A startups already operate across multiple markets, with 95% planning international growth within 12 months. The trend is most pronounced in Northern Europe and DACH regions, where regulatory alignment and talent mobility lower barriers.

Investors report that international traction at seed stage correlates with 3.6x higher Series A valuations and 7.3x faster revenue scaling. However, only 14% achieve "product-market fit" simultaneously across markets, highlighting execution challenges.

Experts attribute the shift to digital-first business models, EU single-market advantages, and competitive pressure from US counterparts entering European markets earlier.
