Generation Investment Management Secures $1B for Long-Hold Sustainable PE Strategy

Generation Investment Management has completed the $1 billion final close of its Sustainable Private Equity Fund II, marking a significant milestone for the firm's extended investment approach. The fund targets companies requiring longer holding periods than traditional private equity structures typically allow.

Partner Tom Hodges noted that conventional PE holding periods often fall short when attempting to transform entire market segments. This longer-hold strategy reflects growing investor recognition that meaningful sustainable business transformation requires patient capital and extended time horizons.

The original strategy invested in three platform companies including Octopus Energy, its spinout Kracken Technologies, and financial services firm FNZ. These investments demonstrate Generation's focus on building sustainable businesses rather than pursuing quick exits.

The successful fundraising signals strong institutional demand for private equity strategies aligned with sustainability objectives. As more firms adopt extended holding periods, this could reshape how private equity approaches long-term value creation in impact-focused investments.
