Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) added nearly $2.5bn to its infrastructure portfolio in fiscal year 2025, bringing its total infrastructure allocation to a new high. Despite this growth, the fund maintains only 4% of its infrastructure assets within Japan, highlighting a significant home-market gap.

The world's largest pension fund is actively seeking a new domestic infrastructure manager to address this underweight position. GPIF's infrastructure strategy continues to favor overseas investments, particularly in core and core-plus assets across North America and Europe.

With ¥224 trillion in total assets under management, GPIF's infrastructure allocation remains a small but growing portion of its overall portfolio. The search for a domestic manager signals a potential shift toward increasing local exposure, though international diversification will likely remain the dominant theme.
