The most active startup acquirers of the past three years include some surprising names. Salesforce tops the list with 16 seed- and venture-backed acquisitions, including recent purchases of Momentum and Cimulate AI. OpenAI follows with 16 acquisitions in just three years, focusing heavily on acqui-hires like OpenClaw's team and developer tools such as Astral and Promptfoo.

Snowflake rounds out the top three with 19 acquisitions, most recently buying Observe for its AI observability capabilities after the company raised over $460 million in venture funding. These tech giants join a broader group of 79 companies that acquired three or more startups in the past three years, ranging from blue-chip pharmaceutical firms to fast-growing unicorns.

While prolific acquirers aren't always the biggest spenders, Google leads in total deal value with its $32 billion acquisition of Wiz. The AI sector continues driving momentum, with 2026 already seeing major deals like Capital One's $5.15 billion purchase of Brex and Eli Lilly's $2.4 billion acquisition of Orna Therapeutics. This sustained appetite for both acqui-hires and strategic acquisitions suggests the startup M&A boom shows no signs of slowing.
