LeCun's AI Lab Raises $1B in Europe's Biggest Seed Round

Yann LeCun, the Turing Award-winning AI pioneer, has launched Advanced Machine Intelligence with a staggering $1.03 billion seed round, marking Europe's largest-ever startup funding. The Paris-based company aims to develop 'world models' - AI systems that understand and interact with three-dimensional reality rather than just processing text and images.

This funding, led by Bezos Expeditions and other major investors, values AMI at $3.5 billion despite being in its earliest stage. LeCun's vision challenges the current generative AI paradigm, arguing that today's large language models are inherently limited by their two-dimensional approach. 'World models will be the next buzzword,' CEO Alexandre LeBrun predicted, suggesting every company will adopt this terminology to attract investment.

While most AI funding has flowed to U.S.-based generative AI companies, this massive European investment signals growing interest in physical-world AI applications. The deal follows similar momentum for World Labs, founded by Fei-Fei Li, which also raised $1 billion last month. This shift comes as global venture funding hits records, with OpenAI's recent $110 billion round dominating headlines, while Europe sees fewer but increasingly ambitious AI investments.
