WWDC 2026 Abandons Traditional Platform Format for Theme-Driven Keynote

Apple scrapped its long-standing platform-by-platform presentation style at WWDC 2026, opting instead for three broad themes: Platform improvements, trust and safety, and Apple Intelligence and Siri. This marked a significant shift from previous years when the company methodically walked through iOS, macOS, watchOS, and other operating systems in sequence.

The trust and safety segment consumed over ten minutes, featuring new parental controls including mandatory child accounts for users under 13 and an Ask to Browse feature requiring parental approval before visiting new websites in Safari. Apple appeared to respond directly to mounting regulatory pressure on tech companies with these prominent safety announcements.

Siri AI demonstrations also differed dramatically from the 2024 rollout, where The Information reported Apple showed only concept videos. This year, presenters visibly waited for real-time responses, suggesting functional progress. Apple Intelligence and Siri took center stage in the new format, reflecting deeper cross-platform integration across the ecosystem.

Live, in-person media demos returned after years of pre-recorded presentations, and the visual style shifted toward handheld footage rather than heavily stabilized steadicam work. These changes gave WWDC a more conversational, pre-pandemic feel that contrasted sharply with recent virtual-heavy events. Craig Federighi later fielded direct questions in a post-keynote Tech Talk session.
