Meta Faces EU Digital Services Act Probe

The European Commission has released preliminary findings that Meta’s Facebook and Instagram feeds may violate the EU’s Digital Services Act. The investigation highlights addictive design features—infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and highly personalized recommender systems—that the Commission says failed to assess risks to users’ mental and physical well‑being, especially minors and vulnerable adults.

The report criticizes Meta’s risk‑mitigation tools, noting that time‑management features can be dismissed and that parental controls require technical knowledge that most guardians lack. It also points out that Meta ignored data on how much time minors spend on the platforms<Modelquare> at night, andodne the role of reels and stories in driving compulsive use.

To address the findings, the Commission recommends design changes: disabling addictive features by default, implementing effective screen‑time breaks, and adjusting the recommender system to reduce engagement‑driven content. Meta has disputed the findings, claiming its teen‑protection steps were overlooked.

If the Commission upholds its conclusions, Meta could face a fine of up to 6 percent of its global annual turnover, a hit that would pressure the company to overhaul its user‑interface and could trigger broader regulatory scrutiny across the industry.
