Google Preps Native Gemini App for Mac to Challenge ChatGPT

Google is building a native Gemini app for macOS to finally match the dedicated Mac clients already offered by OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. Currently, Mac users must access Gemini through a browser, a workaround that lacks the deep system integration native apps provide. Beta distribution started this week, but Google hasn't announced a release timeline, noting testers only see "critical features" in this early build.

The beta includes core functions like web search, document analysis, and chat history. Testers are specifically asked to review generative capabilities for images, tables, charts, video, and music, along with math and data interpretation. This feedback loop suggests Google is methodically expanding Gemini's toolkit ahead of a public launch, starting from a functional but limited foundation.

Desktop Intelligence is the app's key differentiator—it lets Gemini observe the Mac's screen and extract data from other applications to contextualize responses. The app's own wording clarifies this access is opt-in and active only during Gemini sessions. Coincidentally, Apple's upcoming Siri chatbot in iOS 27/macOS 27 will use a Google-developed AI model, blurring competitive lines as all three giants push AI into daily computing.
