EU Broadcasters Target Apple TV and Siri Under DMA Rules

Europe's biggest broadcasters are pushing the EU to classify Apple TV and Siri as gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act, reports MacRumors. The Association of Commercial Television and Video on Demand Services in Europe (ACT), whose members include Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount+, and Sky, sent a letter to EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera demanding that smart TV platforms from Google, Amazon, Apple, and Samsung face stricter regulation.

Under the DMA, platforms with over 45 million monthly active EU users and a market valuation above €75 billion are presumed to be gatekeepers. The broadcasters cited Android TV's growth from 16 percent to 23 percent market share between 2019 and 2024, and Amazon Fire OS's climb from 5 percent to 12 percent. While Samsung's Tizen holds 24 percent, Apple TV's share wasn't mentioned. The ACT also wants virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri regulated, arguing they act as de facto gatekeepers for media content across devices.

The European Commission confirmed it received the letter and is reviewing it. While Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung haven't commented, the request may face challenges since Apple TV's market share appears relatively small. However, the DMA does allow for qualitative assessments, as demonstrated when the Commission designated iPadOS as a gatekeeper despite not meeting quantitative thresholds.
