Apple's Google AI Deal Seen as Temporary Move

Apple's partnership with Google to integrate Gemini into upcoming Apple Intelligence features is only a stopgap measure, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Facing pressure to deliver on AI promises made last year, Apple turned to Google to ensure a competitive showing at this year’s WWDC. Kuo notes two key issues pushing this decision: unmet expectations around Siri upgrades and rapidly advancing cloud-based AI from rivals.

The deal gives Apple breathing room while it develops in-house AI server chips, expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2026. Apple-operated data centers are slated for 2027, signaling a shift toward greater AI autonomy. Kuo believes current on-device AI won’t drive hardware sales soon, but long-term control over AI is critical for platform differentiation.

Despite leveraging Google’s technology now, Apple remains focused on owning its AI stack. Its current AI strategy aims to bridge short-term demands without ceding future influence in what’s quickly becoming a core tech battleground.
