Apple is still developing its 18-inch foldable iPad despite significant technical challenges, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The device, which could arrive by 2029, represents a major departure from Apple's traditional separation of Mac and iPad products. While some call it a foldable iPad and others an all-display MacBook, concerns persist about its practicality for typing.

Originally targeting a 2028 launch, the device has been delayed due to weight and display technology issues. Apple is focusing on minimizing the display crease and has already ordered suppliers to begin production of its foldable iPhone, expected later this year. The Samsung-made display will be considerably more expensive than standard iPad screens.

The foldable iPad could cost up to three times the price of the 13-inch iPad Pro, potentially reaching $3,900 if component prices don't decrease. Current prototypes weigh about 3.5 pounds and feature an aluminum chassis that resembles a MacBook when closed. When opened, the device unfolds to roughly the size of a 13-inch MacBook Air but lacks a physical keyboard, creating a unique hybrid between Apple's laptop and tablet lines.
