Developer Nicholas Slattery created the Sony Head Tracker app, repurposing the motion sensors in select Sony headphones for real-time head tracking in PC simulator games. This project leverages the accelerometers and gyroscopes built into headphones like the Sony WF-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM5, originally intended for spatial audio features. The app acts as a bridge, translating the headphones' internal Android Head Tracker protocol, which Windows ignores by default, into a format compatible with the Open Track software.

Open Track supports over 200 PC games, including popular titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator and Assetto Corsa. The Sony Head Tracker app currently supports Sony's WH/WF-1000XM6, WH/WF-1000XM5, and ULT WEAR (WH-ULT900N) models, as these are the only ones featuring the necessary spatial audio hardware. Apple's headphones are incompatible due to their proprietary protocol.

This development offers a cost-effective alternative to dedicated VR or specialized head tracking hardware for PC gamers. By utilizing existing hardware, users can achieve a more immersive experience in simulator titles without additional investment, potentially impacting the market for gaming peripherals.
