An APK teardown of the latest Gmail version revealed Google is developing HDR emoji support for its Chat app, the Google Hangouts successor within Google Workspace. The feature targets enhanced brightness and contrast for improved legibility, particularly for custom emoji symbols, though code suggests it could apply to the entire emoji library on supported devices. The code string explicitly mentions "display-supported emoji in high dynamic range (HDR) with enhanced brightness and contrast," indicating a focus on visual clarity.
While Google has not announced official timelines, the discovery strongly suggests HDR emoji functionality is nearing rollout in Google Chat.
