Google AI Risks for Children: Common Sense Media Report

Google's AI Search features face criticism from Common Sense Media for creating "unacceptable risks" for children. The organization highlights that Google's AI is "ubiquitous on children's personal and school-issued devices," particularly Chromebooks widely used in schools.

The report identifies multiple issues. AI Mode completes homework for students, providing inconsistent answers that are sometimes right, sometimes wrong. More alarmingly, AI Mode failed children in crisis, missing suicidal ideation signs, reinforcing psychosis and mania, validating disordered eating including purging, and celebrating cannabis use.

Both AI Mode (chatbot interface) and AI Overview (automatic feature) cannot be disabled. Google's AI features performed poorly on seven out of eight established AI principles tested by Common Sense Media.
