ChatGPT Returns to WhatsApp in Europe

The European Commission (EC) has compelled Meta to allow third-party AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, back into WhatsApp for free within the European Economic Area (EEA). This decision follows Meta's previous ban in November and a subsequent move to charge for access in March.

As a result, users in the EEA can now interact with ChatGPT directly within WhatsApp. The service is accessible via the 1-800-CHATGPT number, eliminating the need to install the standalone ChatGPT app. Users can engage in conversations, upload pictures, send voice messages, and generate images all within the WhatsApp interface.

The EC's investigation into Meta's practices is ongoing. However, Meta is required to maintain free access to third-party AI chatbots on WhatsApp until the EC issues its final ruling.
