Apple found a software workaround to ship the iPhone 18 Pro Max with batteries exceeding the 20Wh international shipping limit. The US model has a rated capacity of 5,567mAh (21.75Wh), while the EU version is 5,391mAh (21.06Wh), both above the threshold. A software restriction limits charge below 20Wh during shipping, which is removed upon first use.

Users can toggle this feature for overseas shipment. The US transport regulator approved the method in June 2025, though ADR, IATA, and ICAO have not yet commented. The UN Sub-Committee on Transport of Dangerous Goods is reviewing the 20Wh limit, with updates expected by 2029.

Apple’s approach may set a precedent, enabling larger batteries in global markets without regional model splits. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is already sold in the EU, suggesting regulatory tolerance. This method avoids the need for multi-cell batteries or reduced capacity in regulated regions.
