Elon Musk announced that X, formerly Twitter, will soon implement a new feature for its Community Notes system. Users who interact with a post that later receives a Community Note correction will now receive a direct message about the change.

This update aims to make users more aware of potentially misleading information circulating on the platform. Currently, interactions trigger in-app notifications only after a note is deemed helpful and has been live for 24 hours. The direct message approach may be harder for users to overlook than standard notifications.

X introduced Community Notes in 2022 as its primary method for combating misinformation. Despite this effort, a study in Nature Communications found that these notes often arrive too late to stop the initial viral spread of misinformation. Nevertheless, the concept has influenced other platforms, with Meta adopting community notes across its apps in 2025.
