Wizards of the Coast Developers Push to Unionize with CWA

Magic: The Gathering Arena developers at Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast are moving to join the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The union says it has a supermajority in favor of a new chapter, United Wizards of the Coast. An election has been filed with the NLRB, but it will be withdrawn if the company recognizes the union by May 1st.

Engineers cite layoffs, remote‑work policies, and mandatory crunch as key grievances. Senior software engineer Damien Wilson says they seek a say in layoffs, accountability throughout the chain, and a living wage that lets people build a life. Workers also demand generative‑AI guardrails and greater workplace transparency and equity.

The move follows 2023 mass layoffs that cut nearly 2,000 Hasbro employees, sparking concerns that corporate decisions no longer align with staff values. The CWA has already helped organize teams at Blizzard, ID Software, and indie publishers, bringing together over 4,000 workers under its Campaign to Organize Digital Employees (CODE).

Unionization could reshape how game studios handle employee relations, setting a precedent for living wages, transparent layoffs, and AI policy oversight. If the NLRB election proceeds, it will enforce formal recognition and bargaining rights. Until then, Wizards faces a deadline to acknowledge the union, or risk a formal labor dispute that could affect development timelines.
